{"id":85,"date":"2024-07-25T23:50:13","date_gmt":"2024-07-25T23:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ecobuddyproject.co.nz\/?page_id=85"},"modified":"2025-04-16T23:54:46","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T23:54:46","slug":"home-composting","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ecobuddyproject.co.nz\/index.php\/home-composting\/","title":{"rendered":"Home Composting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Home Composting Guide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By composting your food and garden waste, you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reduce your waste going to landfill<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>make a positive impact on climate change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>improve the health of your soil by enriching it with organic matter and nutrients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s best to keep food and garden waste out of our rubbish bins, where it will end up in landfill. Conditions in landfill aren\u2019t right for organic waste to break down into compost; instead it rots, and produces methane (a&nbsp;greenhouse gas). It also contributes to making toxic leachate, which can contaminate our environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If home composting isn\u2019t for you, there are other options to ensure your food or garden waste is composted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compost recipe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s important to get the balance of greens and browns right. When you add food waste\/Bokashi solids or lawn clippings to your compost, try to alternate with browns\/dry materials. Otherwise your compost pile may go anaerobic, and become a smelly sludge. Think of your compost as a sandwich, where browns are the bread and greens are the filling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Feeding your compost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep feeding your compost 30 percent greens and 70 percent browns. This will help build up heat to speed up the composting. Compost should be moist like a sponge; add water to the dry material, cover to trap moisture, and make sure there is plenty of air flow. Turning your compost will speed up the composting process, but isn\u2019t essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to add<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>30 percent greens: anything soft, fresh, and nitrogen rich:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>chopped fruit and veggie scraps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>eggshells<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cooked veggie leftovers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>coffee grounds, tea leaves and tea bags<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fresh garden waste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fresh grass clippings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>70 percent browns: anything brown, brittle and carbon rich:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>small twigs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>dried brown grass clippings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cardboard and certified home compostable packaging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>paper towels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>dry leaves and garden waste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>indoor cut flowers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>What not to add<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Noxious weeds, dog and cat faeces (manure from grass-eating animals is fine), oil and other liquids, cooked and\/or processed foods (eg, bread, pasta and meat \u2013 unless it has been treated with Bokashi first).\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Harvest time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Compost is ready to harvest when it becomes dark and crumbly and you cannot identify the original materials in it. This normally takes 6\u20139 months. Harvest the bottom third of composted material by removing the bin. With a garden fork, take the top two-thirds of semi-composted material and place it back in the bin. This will leave a pile of good quality compost to spread over your garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Your health and safety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Compost can contain micro-organisms such as Legionella, which can cause serious illness. We advise you wear a face mask and\/or avoid breathing in vapour if the compost is steaming. Mix it with a garden fork while adding water.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Smelly or slimy<\/td><td>Your compost is either too wet, lacking browns, or needs air. Mix it up and add some browns (scrunched up newspaper or torn cardboard work well). Add a sprinkle of garden lime.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Flies<\/td><td>Don\u2019t add meat scraps or cooked food. Cover food with a thick layer of browns.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Rodents<\/td><td>Don\u2019t add meat, cooked or processed foods. Make sure your compost is hot by adding the right balance of browns and greens, water and air.
